Some employees always perform at high levels, need little or no direction, and appear to enjoy what they are doing. On the other hand, other employees perform only at marginal levels, require constant attention, and are often absent from their work stations.

The reasons for these differences in performance vary and are complex. They can be from employees, from their superior, or from organization. The core concept associated with each of these properties is motivation.

To know the factors influencing employees motivation, on this research a survey to Caltex employees using questionnaire developed by Luthans is conducted. The questionnaire consists of 20 statements which refer to Maslow theory so that basically the statements can be grouped in five levels of Maslows hierarchy.

Maslow model is used on this research because it investigates the human needs in more details compared to other theories, starting from lower level to higher level needs.
