The mechanisms of active control are implemented by using active tuned mass damper (ATMD) installed on the top floor of the buildings. The control forces are calculated using optimal control algorithm. The artificial neural network observer is used to estimate the unmeasureable states due to limitation of sensors. The case study consists of two parts. The first part is simulation of two dimensional shear buildings controlled by using ATMD. The shear buildings are excited by earthquake accelerations. All state variables are assumed be available for computation of the control forces. The evaluation of ATMD effectiveness is carry out by comparing three kinds of responses: controlled by ATMD, controlled by TMD, and without control. The second part is application of neural observer at shear building-ATMD system. In this part it is assumed only the displacement available for feedback process. The estimated states from the neural observer are compared with the actual states. Results of the simulation show that ATMD is effective to reduce drift and total acceleration. ATMD is more effective in reducing drift rather than reducing total acceleration. The neural observer produces estimated states that are different from the actual states. However, the pattern of control forces calculated from the estimated states is similar to the pattern of the actual control forces. text
