EFFECT OF DOWNSTREAM OBSTRUCTION ON SATURATION FLOW,
Bandung.
This thesis describes a study at a major signal
intersection in Bandung about the effect of downstream
obstruction on saturation flow. The objectives of the
study were to identify fluctuations in saturation flow
and to define the effects caused by a stopping angkot
at several downstream locations without considering the
duration of stop.
calculation of saturation flow value were
performed using Program PASS. The study analyzed two
consideration ie; (1) unobstructed saturated discharge
conditions and ( 2) obstructed saturated discharge
conditions.
The Study concludes that, saturation flows were
found to be reduced due to a stopping angkot downstream
of the stopline, although this reduction was only
observed with long stopline queues where the effect of
stop reached back to the stopline discharge flow. The
prevailing saturation flow for observed 9.8 meter wide
approach is 6296 pcuphg, which is 6.7 % higher than
the IHCM estimate, 12 % higher for protected right
turning. Data from observed 4-lane approach indicate
that the effect of stopping angkot in lane-1 also
affected lane-2 to smaller degree. The data show that ,
the nearer the location of downstream stop, the larger
the reduction in saturation flow, with an almost linear
relationship, the best relationship was with a
logarithmic regression line, but the resulting
reduction factors are practically similar. The observed
show that an angkot stop at 73 meter downstream of
stopline does not reduce the saturation flow, this
value is probably related to the length of queue which
was discharge during the green phase.
For further study it is recommended to
investigate many locations and smaller approach widths
around the country to be able to define a nationally
representative procedure factor for IHCM. |
