Description
Summary:Coal is one of the oil alternative energy sources (fossil energy sources) that has high potential in Indonesia. According to research potential of coal in Indonesia reached 105 billion tons and coal reserves reached 22 billion tons by the end of 2008. Coal in Indonesia mostly have medium quality. In the mining process, which is taken from the ground coal is not pure but includes rocks, gravel, clay and others that are generally referred to as an impurities. This debris will be separated using a hydrocyclone separator that works based on differences in specific gravity (density) of coal with impurities. The

initial design of the cyclone has been made previously by M. Arif Hakim and then built and tested by the author. The testing the system of hydrocyclone separator coal with impurities is performed to determine the separation efficiency of the cyclone. Previously has been performed a simulations using CFD Fluent software to determines the behavior of particles in the hydrocyclone and to determine its estimated efficiency. Data from testing is used to calculate the actual efficiency of the cyclone. The results of the calculation of the efficiency of the cyclone is then compared with the results of simulation efficiency for

later analyzed the causes of the differences between the simulation results with test results. The main purpose of this test is to prove that the two types of particles having different densities can be separated using hydrocyclone with a fluid that has density between the

density of the two particles. From several times testing, the average efficiency of hydrocyclone are 20% for pumice and 30% for stones. This efficiency is still far than the efficiency results from the simulation that are 98.34% and 98.75%. Some of the causes of low efficiency : there is no

adequate system of inclusion particles, flow measurements are not accurate, there are many leaks in the cyclone body and so on.
