ANALYSIS OF EGT MARGIN DEGRADATION ENGINE CFM56-3 BOEING 737-300/400/500

EGT Margin as one of the aircraft engine’s health parameters is being used in the research. EGT Margin is the difference between the allowed exhaust gas temperature and the actual temperature. Engines having a rapid degradation of the EGT Margin indicates a problem is occurring. Based on the resu...

EGT Margin is the difference between the allowed exhaust gas temperature and the actual temperature. Engines having a rapid degradation of the EGT Margin indicates a problem is occurring. Based on the results of analysis of the data collected in the period of January 2009-April 2011 from an Indonesian engine shop, there are five engines which have a high degradation of EGT Margin.

For those engines an identification of the contributing factors for the EGT Margin degradation is carried out. The research consists of two type of analysis namely the qualitative analysis and the quantitative one. The qualitative analysis investigates the contribution of thrust rating, the condition of the main components of the engine and hot start and high vibration problems. While quantitative analysis investigates the impact of the ratio of EFH : EFC, the use of the take-off derating, ambient temperature, shop visit quality and engine life. The quantitative analysis calculates the Spearman rank correlation to identify the correlation between the contributing factors with the EGT Margin degradation. The qualitative analysis is carried out using graphs and summary reports.

From the results of the analysis, factors which have a strong correlation with the degradation of EGT margin for that period are the shop visit quality, ambient temperature,take-off without derate, engine high vibration, and hot start problems. Take-off without derate has the highest correlation with EGT Margin degradation, with correlation coefficient of 0.9. The shop visit quality has correlation coefficient of 0.8 and the ambient temperature has a correlation coefficient of 0.3. text
