The conversion of glycerol to other products must be done to avoid environmental problem caused by glycerol waste, and to increase biodiesel industry efficiency. Ethanol is a potential alternative product because it has higher sell value and it can be used as fuel.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> The main objective of this research is to convert glycerol to ethanol microbiologically, using Paenibacillus macerans. Anaerobic and aerobic fermentation is held in this research without pH control. The diferentiated parameters are fermentation temperature at 37, 40 , and 43ºC, starting medium pH at 4,8, 5,5, 6, and 6,5, and also substrate concentration at 3,6, 5, 10, 15, and 20%-weight, to obtain optimum fermentation condition and maximum ethanol yield. Ethanol analysis is done using GC-unit, pH using pH meter, cell concentration using spectrometer, and glycerol using iodide-thiosulfate titration.<p> <br /> <br /> <br /> This research has been done using four anaerobic fermentor and one aerobic fermentor, and pure glycerol substrate. It can be implied that optimum fermentation temperature is 40ºC, and optimum starting pH is 6,5. Ethanol is not produced in glycerol substrate concentration of more than 5%-weight, but acid product –possibly lactic acid- is formed. Ethanol yield at 5% glycerol concentration is 0,26 g ethanol / g glycerol on the 9-th day of fermentation. Specific growth constant at 2% gycerol concentraition is 0,49 h-1. text
