Description
Summary:With the implementation of the free trade system in several countries including Indonesia, construction companies need a quality management method that involves the whole levels and functions in their organization to maintain their

competitiveness. In this regard, through this study on quality management in 18 big contractors which have acquired ISO9000 certificate in the the cities of Bandung and Jakarta, it is revealed that 83.33% of them have a very high and high compliance to Total Quality Management (TQM) in their approach. This compliance is measured through analysis of the existence of TQM steps and elements in the management process. It is also shown that based on these levels of compliance there are three patterns of TQM application among the respondemts. Five main TQM elements are identified to be given the most attention by these

state owned as well as private construction companies, namely education and training, top mangement commitment and leadership, process improvement, supplier improvement, and vision, mission, and basic principles determination. This research also shows that the Malcolm Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence is adopted by these contractors as a basic framework for their quality management approach. In the identified TQM application pattern it is revealed

that the management system has integrated quality, work safety and health, and environment. The identified pattern can further be used as a reference by construction companies to improve their quality management in a sustainable manner.
