INFLUENCE OF OCTANE NUMBER AND COMPRESSION RATIO TO GASOLINE ENGINE PERFORMANCE WITH CARBURETOR SYSTEM

The increasing of compression ratio of an engine can enhanced the power and efficiency in result for a better motor performance. Increasing a compression ratio on a SI engine is limited by detonation. Detonation can decrease an engine performance that in the long run it will damage the engine. The o...

Increasing a compression ratio on a SI engine is limited by detonation. Detonation can decrease an engine performance that in the long run it will damage the engine. The octane number is closely related with detonation, the higher octane number means for a higher resistant of detonation. The test was done by changing the octane number and compression ratio to see how they influence the performance of the engine. In addition, its purpose is to know the relation of octane number and compression ratio. Fuel testing done on bomb calorimeter and engine performance testing done on chassis-dynamometer. Testing used 4-stroke spark ignition engine with carburetor system. Compression ratio of engine was changed from 1:9 to 1:15 and the performance is analyzed at 3000 rpm until 8000 rpm. Conclusions of the tests are octane number used on the same engine compression ratio cannot influence engine performance. The performance is influenced by another fuel characteristic. By using the appropriate octane number with their compression ratio can make an optimum performance. Engine compression ratio can affect the result of AFR stoichiometry, torque, and engine power. An increase in compression ratio can produce a bigger torque and power. A one-step higher of a compression ratio will increase the torque as much as 0.3 N.m and power as much as 0.4 HP. The relationship between the effective power and compression ratio can be expressed by equation: Ne= k.Vl.rx.(y1+y2.n+y3.n2).0,5 text
