Summary: | Thermal Spray is a method of coating materials by utilizing thermal energy, in addition this technique also can be used in repair process of a piece of equipment or component which deformed or degraded in quality. The research observed the quality of thermal spray process resulting from several parameters. Powder flame spray is used in this research. Tool steel is used as the substrate while Eutalloy 10112 which consist of tungsten, nickel and chromium, used as the filling powder. The process parameter that used in this research are shape of notch, preheating, and the distance of powder spraying.
Three notches were formed to the substrate are keyhole, U and V. Distance of powder spraying is varied into two values : 1 cm and 2 cm. Preheating parameter performed to all specimens of 200 oC and 300 oC, where another two specimens were not preheated.
The quality of flame spray process results can be observed by the micro structure of the base metal in the boundary between the substrate and the coating. At U notch, the results tend to have the best attachment with preheating at 300°C and spraying distance of 1cm. In addition, the hardness test also performed with hardness vicker in three areas which is substrate, coating and the boundary area between substrate and coating. |
