STUDY OF EFFECTS OF PH VALUE AND FLUID FLOW VELOCITY TO EROSION CORROSION PHENOMENA ON CARBON STEEL

Erosion corrosion phenomena becomes one of the main problem that caused damages on the equpments used in the oil and gas industries. It is especially happened to pipes which are used to transport fluid from one unit process to another. The material of the pipe is usually carbon steel, which is prone...

It is especially happened to pipes which are used to transport fluid from one unit process to another. The material of the pipe is usually carbon steel, which is prone tobe corroded, and with the presence of corrosive fluid along with the high fluid flow velocity, the damage caused by corrosion is worse. This research purposes are to study the damages occured in the corrosive environment, which is acidic environment, and also the damage caused by erosion phenomena from varieties of fluid flow velocity. One of the influential parameter in the erosion corrosion phenomena is the environment. Acidic environment (low pH value) increases the corrosion rate of carbon steel. Furthermore with the combination of corrosive environment and the high fluid flow velocity , the damage caused will rise significantly. The higher the fluid flow velocity, the worse the damage occured, beacause it involves the damage of oxide layer on the surface of the metal. This research done with assumptions that the higer the fluid flow velocity the damage occured dominated by erosion. On the other hand the lower the fluid velocity the higher the domination of corrosion to the damage of the material. On the critical velocity the The result of this research shows that weight loss of the specimens on pH value 2,5 are higher than those on pH value 4. On pH value 2,5 numbers of H+ ion are greater and increase the consumption of electrons which accelerates corrosion. Meanwhile the specimens which exposes to the highest velocity, 10.62 m/s, shows the greatest weight loss of all for both pH condition. The damage of oxide layer on the surface of the metal occured on the higher fluid flow velocity. text
