One of the polymers being developed is

polyurethane synthesized from castor oil as an alternative polymer in controlling sand production in the oil reservoir. Polyurethane was prepared by polymerization of ricinoleic acid obtained from hydrolysis of castor oil and diisocyanate monomer, MDI, with the mole ratio of 1:1. Based on the results obtained, the optimal concentration of polyurethane used in the

immersion of the artificial core was 5.5%, which resulted in the increase compressive strength about 150-250 psi, the reduce porosity about 2-2.6% and the reduce permeability

about 3-13 md. The effect of PEG and glycerol in the modification of polyurethanes resulted in the increase compressive strength 190-880 psi, the reduce porosity about 5-6.5% and the reduce permeability about 4-9 md. In addition, the intrinsic viscosity of the polyurethane was

0.729 dL/g and increased to 1.350 and 2.677 dL/g with the addition of PEG and glycerol, respectively. Based on the results of modification and optimization of polyurethanes, they can increase the degree of consolidation of the rock, so polyurethanes can be used as an alternative polymer to resolve the problem of the presence of sand in the oil reservoir. text
