Description
Summary:The using of Phase Change Material (PCM) as a secondary refrigerant or its component is one of many ways to save energy. TME (trimethylolethane: CH3C(CH2OH)3) is one of many PCM that able to improve performance of cooling machine. But the using of TME can’t be a solution in Indonesia because its price is high. So, it is necessary to find an alternative PCM that can be gotten easily and low in price to be used in Indonesia. It is not enough to evaluate only the physical, especially the thermal properties, and chemical properties, but the PCM also must be tested in the real air conditioning system, so its effect to the air conditioning system’s performance can be evaluated and calculated. In this final project, an alternative PCM of a mixture of coconut oil biodiesel and palm oli biodiesel with 1:5 rasio of weight is choosen. The PCM is used as a component in secondary refrigerant and was tested in chilled water air conditioning system that located in Thermodynamics Laboratory, PAU ITB. The test result was compared with the result of using water as a secondary refrigerant without PCM additive. The result show that COP of chilled water air conditioning system increase 1,9 and 3,1 times, respectively, for 2,5% and 5% (%volume) contents of PCM in secondary refrigerant.
