Air conditioning system of a mall in Bekasi was chosen as an example of a research topic for finding solution in controlling energy problem for building. <br />

State electricity company which hold a majority portion as electric power provider offers two rates, off-peak load rate and on-peak load rate. The on-peak load period starts from 5.00 p.m and finish at 10.00 p.m. The tariff of on-peak load is twice price of off-peak load. <br />

Thermal energy storage was chosen to control energy problem in the building. Thermal energy storage (TES) is a method of energy management that could be applied for reducing operation cost of air conditioning xyxtem especially on peak load period. <br />

Ten type air conditioning system such as conventional central air cooled and water cooled system, thermal energy storage iceball full and partial storage with air and water cooled chiller, and thermal energy storage spherical nodule full and partial storage with air and water cooled chiller have been studied. The most economical cost (investment cost and operation cost) of air conditioning system will be chosen as the criteria for designing the type of air conditioning for this commercial building without reducing comfortness level. <br />

The result shows for estimated cooling load around 440,76 TR, the application of TES iceball with water cooled ice chillers system has the lowest total cost. This system could reduce the annual operation cost up to 65% comparatively to the air cooled conventional chiller system. This system also matchs with Indonesia condition because analysis shows that this system was suitable to design criteria (24,7oC Trm, 54%RH). |
