However before it can be recommended as an alternative fuel for general use in direct injection diesels some problems need to be investigated and solutions for them developed. These include higher viscosity, lower volatility and somewhat lower LHV than standard diesel fuel. <br /> <br /> <br /> In this investigation the viscosity of PPaO was reduced by pre-heating to a minimum temperature of 65 oC and mixing with diesel fuel in the ratio 1:1 by volume. The effect of <br /> <br /> <br /> adding a small amount of hydrogen, (±80ml. per minute) as a stoichiometric mixture of hydrogen and oxygen (HHO) obtained by the electrolysis of water, was also evaluated. <br /> <br /> <br /> Results of the test program indicate that the addition of HHO, improved the combustion of the mixed PPaO-diesel fuel and reduced emissions of CO by 9,5% (at 1000 rpm), of THC by 9,01% (at 1000 rpm) and smoke opacity by 23,07% (at 1000 rpm). Supplementation with HHO also reduced BSFC at 1000 rpm by 1,7% and improved the thermal efficiency of the PPaO-diesel fuel by 1,8% when compared with PPaO-diesel fuel. <br /> <br /> <br /> This study indicates that in a direct injection diesel engine the performance of PPaO : diesel fuel mixed in the ratio 1:1 is not much different from diesel and harmful emissions are reduced.
