VARTM methods are used to make sandwich structure with the core using balsa wood. Three matrix were composed and used for the base material of the sandwich structure. The research on VARTM configuration design covers four important aspects; maintaining the negative pressure inside the mold, configuration of the inlet and outlet locations, using taper core and configuration design of vacuum hose. All of the aspects were done so that the matrix infusion process would succeed, hence the product is not scraped.

3-point bending mechanichal testing were done to obtain flexural characteristics from each matrix variant. This testing are conducted on two specimen, which is laminate beam and sandwich beam. MT-B has both the highest flexural strength and stiffness on laminate testing. While on sandwich, the highest flexural strength belongs to MT-A2. Results was also obtained that the products fabricated from VARTM method have better quality (fiber fraction volume) 27% and have better flexural strength 31% than hand lay-up method. text
