Damage of a roller bearing in these types of machines can cause big losses, especially when damage occured suddenly. To detect bearing defect, Suralaya Generation Business Unit (UBP Suralaya) only performs vibration measurements using VS data acquisition. Eventhough VS data acquisition has capability to detect of bearing defect by using shock pulse method.

This research was conducted to compare the results of shock pulse and vibration measurements using LO and VS data acquisitions on new, worn, and damaged roller bearings, due to changes in load, lubricant viscosity, and rotating speed levels. LO data acquisition has two shock pulse measurement methods that is dBm/dBc and LR/HR, whereas VS has only one shock pulse measurement method that is dBm/dBc. Therefore, the comparison done in this research dedicates only to the dBm/dBc method and vibration measurement. Testing was performed on new bearing operated at three levels of rotating speed, i.e 1000 RPM, 1250 RPM, and 1500 RPM. After the rotating speed variation have been done, the testing was continued with the variation of lubricant viscosity, i.e ISO VG 32, ISO VG 46, and ISO VG 68. The research then continued with testing variations of load levels, i.e 100 N, 200 N, and 300 N. Similar testing is then repeated for worn and damaged roller bearings.

The results of this research indicate that the method dBm/dBc generated by LO data acquisition has shock pulse values more consistent than those of the VS data acquisition. However, vibration testing shows that both data acquisition device delivers almost the same value.
text
