Summary: | This final project main objective is to rejuvinate and develop reciprocating masses test rig as an educational aid. The major restriction is the developed test rig has to take advantage of the existing reciprocating masses apparatus made by Tecquipment. The modification will include the replacement of the supporting shaft and the utilization of accelerometer as vibration pick-up. Minor modifications that will be performed are cleaning, washing, and sand-papering of the pistons and the cylinders. The contribution of this final project is the addition of educational aid that will help students to reinforce their understanding on the topic of balancing of reciprocating masses. This topic is normally taught in Kinematics and Dynamics of Machineries class in Mechanical Engineering Department. The test rig also provides additional arsenal for the Basic Mechanical Engineering Phenomena laboratory class. In total, there are four configurations that may be simulated using the test rig, namely the primary and secondary forces combined, primary force only, secondary force only, and balance condition. The data are presented in time and frequency domain. Analysis shows that the test rig performs well for all configurations, in the sense that they reflect the existence of the simulated excitation forces. However, for the balance condition, accelerometer still detects small vibration amplitude. This indicates that the device needs to be fine tuned by adding coins to the pistons. |
