IDENTIFICATION OF PHASE CHANGE MATERIAL TO BE USED AS SECONDARY REFRIGERANT COMPONENT IN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM

The highest energy needs for buildings is an electrical energy . This building requires substantial power. In commercial building , equipment such as air conditioning system consumes high electrical energy. Nearly 60% of electric energy is used for air conditioning systems. One of the technologies t...

One of the technologies to improve the efficiency of air conditioning is to use phase change materials (PCM) as a component of the secondary refrigerant.

Objective of t his study is identification of phase change materials from organic oils such as: palm oil, coconut oil, castor oil, Bi odiesel coconut oil, and Biodiesel palm oil. The identification of phase change materials was done by mixing some organic oils. Tests were done by using thermometers, thermocouples, and DSC . Results of the experiments are freezing, melting temperature and also latent heat values . The freezing and melting temperature must accordance with operating temperature range of chilled water (6-120C). From the result, the proper mats composition that mee ts as phase change materials to be

used in air conditioning systems are cooking oil and Biodiesel palm oil (1: 9), bulk cooking oil and coconut oil (1: 2), cooking oil and coconut oil (1: 1), Biodiesel coconut oil and Biodiesel palm oil (1: 5), Castor oil and coconut oil (1: 1), and Biodiesel palm oil (100%). All compositions can be used as phase change materials for the components of the secondary refrigerant. However, the best oil to be used as PCM is considerat ion Biodiesel palm oil. text
