In the previous study, it was known that corrosion caused by microorganisms oxidizing iron (Thiobacillus ferooxidans) has a significant role towards the economic losses for industry. Biofilm on metal surface caused by microorganism can alter the electrochemical characteristics of the metal surface and can induce the occurrence of corrosion. To overcome these problems, extraction of Sargassum sp. and Gracilaria sp. that is suspected as an antimicrobial agent is used in this study. Yield of exctraction macroalgal using methanol-chloroform (1:1) as solvent was 44.5% for Sargassum sp and 36.5% for Gracilaria sp. Those extract was tested toward inhibit on the growth of Thiobacillus ferooxidans qualitatively (visible) and quantitatively (weight-loss method). The growth curve showed that T. ferooxidans was able to grow until day 7th and had a stationary phase on day 8 th. Analysis of corrotion inhibiting effect using weight-loss method was performed using a coupon with a surface area of 3.6 cm2. The analysis showed that at day 7 th the methanol extract of Sargassum and Gracilaria have antibacterial activity against the growth of T. ferooxidans at a concentration of 400 μL and 300 μL in 10 mL of media. It is characterized by less severe reduction in the coupon in the media indicating reduced corrosion. The LD50 value of macroalgal extract obtained 477 μL (Sargassum sp) and 318 μL (Gracilaria sp) in 25 ml media. Furthermore the corrosion rate determination is being made with a variety of day. The data show that both extracts of macroalgal could inhibit the growth of T. ferooxidans until the third day. <br /> text |
