Since the crisis in 1997, Indonesian Banking industries have facing a new tight competitive growth environment. Banking managers put serious efforts on continous steady profitability growth in a way to win the competition in the banking industry in healthy competitveness environment. Following the early work by short, B.(1979) and Bourke, P. (1989) have a number of recent studies that attempted to identify determinants of bank profitability. The respective empirical studies generates insight for better understanding on Banking <br /> <br /> <br /> performance, which focused either on cross-country or in the banking industry of individual countries. However this research differs from previous analysis focused on a single bank as the object of research, which is PT. Bank SUMUT as one respective Provincial State own bank in Indonesia that focused its services in North Sumatera <br /> <br /> <br /> Province. <br /> <br /> <br /> This research analyze PT. Bank SUMUT profitability using historical data overtime periode from March 2001 to March 2009 which observed as profitability indicator <br /> <br /> <br /> variables which were ROA and ROE whith internal ratio as bank specific characteristics and external macroeconomics as explenatory variables. Based on correlation analysis result regression, the methode used in this research was multiple regression methode. From regression analysis conducted on this research, it discovered that determinants variables for ROA ratio and ROE respectively are BOPO and NIM for ROA and CAR and <br /> <br /> <br /> BOPO for ROE. The expected outcome of this research is to provide enough evidence of profitability determinants variable for PT. Bank SUMUT managers to construct corporate policy on pursuing more profits growth and leverage their competitiveness among other Indonesian commercial banks especially other provincial state owned banks.
