Summary: | Lately there was a lot of news in published media and internet about the failure of fuel pump in gasoline engine vehicles with injection system. On the other hand, from several fuel samples taken in several places, sulfur content and gum was found with numbers exceed the allowed specification. Gum is a compound which property is like crust and formed in a polymerization reaction from olefin in fuel. Almost every automotive gasoline has olefin content inside. Olefin is a compound which introduced in cracking process of crude oil into several others component with more benefit. Olefin has benefit in increasing octane number in fuel. The drawbacks are its tendency to form gum and increase in dangerous emission from a vehicle. The problems are the relationship between olefin and the failure of fuel pump and the cause of the failure of fuel pump in Indonesia. This research is done to study olefin content in fuel and its relation to the failure of fuel pump. Research method are literature study from several sources, and fuel pump studied here was manufactured by Denso. Fuel pump failure is caused by gum which damaged fuel pump internal components. When the internal components fail, fuel pump will stop working and the vehicle will stop because there are no fuels supplied to the injection system. Olefin is the beginning of gum forming which cause damage on fuel pump. |
