THE EFFECT OF ADVANCED STOP LINES FOR MOTORCYCLES ON TRAFFIC CONFLICTS AT ONE SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION IN BANDUNG

Motorcycles are a major part of the traffic in Bandung but they are not well served by the existing traffic control. Therefore motorcycles are often in conflict with other motorized vehicles, both on links and at intersections. In the western world bicycles may be supported by Advanced Stop Lines (A...

Therefore motorcycles are often in conflict with other motorized vehicles, both on links and at intersections. In the western world bicycles may be supported by Advanced Stop Lines (ASLs) at intersections to facilitate their movements and increase their safety. This idea has been tried in south Bandung to support motorcycle movements at one major signalized intersection between jalan Soekarno-Hatta and jalan Buah Batu. The objectives of this study are to investigate the effect of ASLs on intersection conditions, in particular on the type and intensity of conflict i.e. conflict rate and conflict severity between motorcycles and other motorized vehicles. The ASLs were installed on the dual carriageway of jalan Soekarno-Hatta. Initially the ASLs were seven meters from existing stop line. Subsequently it was repainted at 14 meters from the existing stop line to accommodate the high number of motorcycles. Police control was needed to enforce the novel control. Observations were made with video cameras during the morning and afternoon peak hours, before and after installing the ASLs, and the analyses were carried out in the laboratory. A total of 103 cycles on morning and afternoon peak hour even before and after ASLs installed, with total of 21087 motorcycles were analyzed. In comparison between before and after conditions shows that there is no significant differences in traffic flow proportions. General conditions at the intersection became more orderly, were only a few motorcycles waited in front on the stop line and less weaving action were observed. The throughput of the intersection increased in both the morning and afternoon peak hours by respectively 11,92% and 12,31%. The conflict patterns changed significantly, but the conflict rate decreased from 133,39 conflict/1000 pcus to 24,68 conflict/1000 pcus on the morning peak hour and from 111,10 conflict/1000 pcus to 24,10 conflict/1000 pcus on the afternoon peak hour. The conflict severity also decreased from 1,83 to 1,43 on the morning peak hour and 1,96 to 1,38 on the afternoon peak hour. Overall the introduction of ASLs is regarded as successful. text
