Summary: | The need for reliability and safety of the operating system of a plant has become a necessity, where the losses incurred due to failure in operation is immense. One of the major problem is lightning and the electromagnetic fields it generated. Developments in modern electronic technology has increased the vulnerability of the system against disturbances and damage caused by lightning. Exposure to electromagnetic fields can induce a current in the instrumentation system and cause errors in measurements and readings so that the system shuts-down. An integrated lightning protection system is needed to overcome such interference currents. Not only that they should be able to overcome the lightning peak current due to direct lightning strikes, lightning protection systems must be able to protect from interference currents induced by indirect lightning strikes. |
