There are a few methods in manufacturing natural fibers composites. The most simple and easiest way to do is hand lay-up method. And than, in order to get the better characteristics of composites. So, know developed one method that called Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VaRTM). This method using negative pressure (vacuum) in order to minimize quantity of void (bubble of gas) in composite materials that made using hand lay-up method. Minimizing void is mean increasing the strength of composites materials.
In this research, the author use the abundant natural fibers in Indonesia. However, until this very moment, those materials have not been used optimally. With its renewable properties making this materials easy to get and to use as a basic material in producing composites materials. The fiber that used in this research is a woven silk. Silk is one of material that has good quality, yet until today silk fiber just known as basic material to make clothes.
As matrices in producing natural fibers composites in this research, the author use epoxy resin and it must use diluents as a thinner to give lower viscosity resin required in VaRTM method. Next, the author makes four types of research specimens to be tensile tested. Those are woven silk fiber (without matrices), epoxy resin+diluents (without fiber), composites that made using hand lay-up
method, and composites made using VaRTM method.

In this final assignment research, those specimens will be tensile tested and analyzed to know the mechanical properties of silk fiber reinforced composites materials as a value of modulus of elastisity (E), yield strength (σys),
dan ultimate strength (σu) among those two methods. |
