Recent researches has reached a good understanding of the soil – tool interaction, but load transfer and responses of buried landmines due to loading from the flails remains undefined. Buried landmines acts as an unsupported buried structure and loads from the flailing motion are assessed as an impact loading on the soil surface with emphasis on the vertical feature of the load. A mechanical model is constructed and a corresponding experiment is conducted to better understand the load transfer and dynamic responses of buried structures due to surface impact loading. Response behaviour of the 4 DOF model finds good agreement with the experimental data and is deemed plausible to model and predict the behaviour of a buried landmine in a mine clearing condition or any other unsupported buried structure in soil medium subjected to surface impact loads. text
