Summary: | The resistance of carbon steel used in the industrial application such as oil and gas application is susceptible to the sulfide stress cracking phenomenon, especially for line pipe of carbon steel. In 2009, HSLA steels are becoming more popular as the material choice for large pipeline projects because the advantages of low price-to-yield ratio and low carbon content which impact material, welding and installation cost. In carbon steel pipeline fabrication made of Hot Rolled Coil (HRC), plastic deformation during pipeline fabrication is needed and the notch on material surface could take place. The characterization of HSLA steel plate as material for API 5L X52 pipe line was conducted and SSC testing was done on
as-received material, plastically deformed (plastically strained) specimens with 5% and 10% plastic strain, and notched specimens. The as-received material characterizations were tension test, hardness test,
metallographic, and optical emission spectroscopy and were conducted before SSC test. Four point bending method based on ASTM G 39 standard was applied during SSC test. The test specimens shall be stressed to 72% SMYS for notched
specimens and as-received material. For plastically strained specimens, the test specimens shall be stressed to 72% of actual yield strength of each test specimens. The test procedure and the SSC test solution comply with NACE TM0177-2005 (method B of Bent-beam test). The test solution used for SSC test was solution B. The result of material characterization shows that steel plate as received
material is HSLA steel and hot rolled with ferrite-pearlite microstructure and it is suitable as material for API 5L X52 pipe line. The crack examination on all specimens after SSC test using metallographic and SEM resulted that the crack did not occurred to all specimens except the specimens with plastic strain 10%. However, the crack was not the typical of SSC crack but rather as internal stress
crack caused by cold working of steel plate and/or as hydrogen-induced cracking due to hydrogen trapping. Pitting corrosion and uniform corrosion was also detected on the specimen surface. |
