DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING OF SEMI CONTINUOUS MANUAL RAM PRESS FOR JATHROPHA CURCAS SEEDS

This research embarks on supporting the Jatropha energy village program, a concept that is geared toward establishing an energy self-sufficiency rural area. In the above program, Jatropha plantation will be formed within the rural area. Furthermore, once cultivated, the villagers may harvest the Jat...

In the above program, Jatropha plantation will be formed within the rural area. Furthermore, once cultivated, the villagers may harvest the Jatropha seeds, sun dry, and press the seeds to obtain the crude jatropha oil or CJO. The CJO will be collected and sold to bio-diesel factory. The cake will

also be collected and fed into bio gas reactor. The bio gas may be used by the villagers as an energy source for cooking and electricity (as a fuel for the diesel electric generator). The remaining residue in the reactor is an excellent bio-fertilizer. After everything is said and

done, the jatropha seeds will provide the villagers with electricity and the processing produces minimum waste.

The main tool that is needed by the villagers in producing CJO is a manual ram press. In order to contribute to the Jatropha energy village program, this research attempts to design and manufacture a semi continuous manual ram press for jatropha curcas seeds. The idea is built on the previous work by Karl Bielenberg (1985). Upon studying Bielenberg’s design, a locally developed prototype of semi continuous ram press is completed. Test results show that the ram press produced 250 – 300 ml from 1 kg of jatropha seeds in one hour operation. Currently, 25 units of the device is distributed and operated by the villagers in

Pulau Bungin, Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. text
