Summary: | Mechanism to increased penetration from the adoption of active flux on Tungsten Inert Gas welding process (A-TIG) has been known since first published by the Paton Welding Institute (PWI) Ukraine1/. Generally, the flux used in
Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW). In SMAW and SAW types of welding, the flux serves as a protective gas liquid metal, improved arc, and as alloying additions2/. In TIG welding, the application
of flux aims to increase the welding penetration, thereby increasing productivity. Deeper penetration will reduce the number of layers on welding thick plate thus reducing the effects of cast to cast on Multi layer welding.
In this experiment, there were five types oxide powder was varied Al2O3, Fe2O3, TiO2, ZnO, and C2O3. For Comparison, SMAW welding process with the type of electrode AWS A5.4 E308-16 JIS Z 3221 D308-16 was carried out with fixed welding parameters. Parent metal used was stainless steel type AISI 316L.

Results from experiments indicated an increasing penetration of 200 to 300 percent compared with the penetration of Conventional-TIG (C-TIG) and SMAW
processes. A-TIG welding also showed decrease weld beat width to depth ratio (W/L) and decreased tendency of distortion in the weld joint. A-TIG welding also shows tendency increase in hardness in the weld metal for all fluxes used. A fairly significant increased in the hardness was on A-TIG welding with ZnO flux.

Besides increase in hardness, the data also show increase in the number of o-ferrite in weld metal off all weld processes. The most significant increase in the number of o-ferrite occurred in SMAW welding process. |
