Summary:Main landing gear as one of major component in aircraft has directly-impact on safety factor level in air transportation. Failure in shear stud brake as one of component assembly in main landing gear can affect operation performance of main landing gear. Fracture of shear study brake was found on B737-400 aircraft with registration code as PK-GWM in Juli 26th 2010 during <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> overhaul maintenance of their brakes. Failed component has been operated in 14.141 cycles (CSN/ Cylce Since New) since September 08th 2002. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Failure analysis was done to reveal the causes of this failure. The analysis method which carried out were visual observation, SEM-fractography, chemical composition analysis, hardness test, metallography analysis, and fracture mechanics analysis. Metallography analysis revealed that there was crack propagation observed on the bottom of nut which mean that excessive applied stress on component ever exist. The fracture phenomena of component can be concluded as synergistic action of developed corrosion deposit product on component and the excessive applied stress. Material for shear stud brake component is AISI 4340.
