Description
Summary:South Palembang Sub-basin is a part of South Sumatra Basin, that located in the south portion area and one of the most prolific hydrocarbon bearings. A suite of samples consisting of nineteen sedimentary rocks and twenty crude oils have been analysed for their characters including source rocks analysis and biomarkers.

Source rock geochemical results indicated that the sedimentary rocks of Lahat Formation, Talangakar Formation and Gumai Formation are potential as petroleum source rocks, because their richness, kerogen types, thermal organic matter are in requirement value. Source rocks of Lahat and Gumai Formation are potential to produce gas and those of the Talangakar Formation a mixing of oil and gas.

Biomarkers, occurring in rocks and oils, may be used for various purposes: the origin of organic matter, paleoenvironment, stage of maturity, correlation source rock - to - oil, and level of biodegradation for crude oil sample. All samples have been analysed for their biological marker compounds by using GC and GC-MS. Biological marker analyses prove that 6 samples of crude oils have been biodegraded.

HCA (Hierarchical Cluster Analysis) and PCA (Principle Component Analysis) programs in the Minitab version 10 software were used for analysis tool in multivariable data processing (geochemical data, biomarker data and isotope carbon data) of the source rocks correlation purpose. Dendogram as a result of HCA analysis was processed from 15 variables data, which divided all of samples to 5 clusters. Cluster-1 and cluster-2 consisted of Lahat and Talangakar sedimentary samples and cluster-3 contained Talangakar sedimentary samples and one crude oil sample. Most of crude oil samples include in cluster-4 and cluster-5.

Shale of SPS-21 and SPS-24 from Talangakar might have been deposited in lacustrine environment, and in general, such shales are those responsible for crude oil production in Talangakar and Baturaja. Although the crude oil found in the Air Benakat and Muara Enim reservoirs are slightly different from others, they might also be produced by the same source rocks.
