Summary: | North South Crushing Plant is part of Concentrating Division of PT Freeport Indonesia located in MP 74 Tembagapura, Papua. In the plant, Crushers crush ore to

smaller size while Screens separate the ore size which the undersize become final product to be sent to NS Mill for further process. In anticipating the future of mining that open pit will be closed and underground mine will be the main source of ore, in 2007 NS Crushing plant has been upgraded and still continued until now.

Business issue in NS Crushing plant is the incompliance to the KPI’s of maintenance performance that caused losses of ore tonnage and dollars due to unplanned

downtime. By using Pareto analysis, Belt Conveyor and Crusher are identified to be the two major contributors to the unplanned downtime and they are to be analyzed

to find the root causes. Six Sigma DMAIIC method is to be implemented in NS Crushing plant maintenance as the best practices maintenance model and as tools to design and implement sustainable plant maintenance improvement program. Fish bone diagram and XY matrix are being used to identify root causes and its weight, and Impact – Effort matrix is developed to calculate the success level of each solutions. The root causes and its solutions then categorized into operating expenditure, operational, procedures, skills, manpower, and engineering. The solutions for improvement are detailed in the implementation plan and to involve key players within the organization. Implementation plans were done some in year 2008 and others are scheduled and in

progress in year 2009. Total potential saving gained from parts is US$ 685,000 and production from reclaiming the potential loss is approximately US$ 7,777,740 by

reducing the downtime in amount of 216.05 hours with US$ 268,000 of improvement costs.
