Summary: | Francis turbine is one of hydropower turbine where the runner is the most important component to produce electricity. The runner has three major parts namely cone, ring, and blades. Runner can be produced by one piece casting or three piece casting. The cone and ring produced by three piece casting must have 4 mm allowances material on certain shapes to enable finishing to be done after assembly process. Thus, several fixtures are needed for the assembly process to accommodate the given allowances material and geometric condition on cone and ring.
The objective of this thesis is to design and to build the fixtures that is suitable for assembling the three piece casting runner through several steps. The fixtures design
process is done by identifying the problems, defining the needs, gathering the information and the ideas, and then making a temporary design and final design. The fixture making process is done by deciding the material to be used, ordering the material and manufacturing the fixtures. The fixtures being manufactured are categorized into support fixtures and tack weld fixtures. Having all fixtures and
components of runner are available the assembly process can be started. First step is positioning and clamping cone and ring component by runout process. The second step is to positioning the blades by tack welding and full welding using GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding).

The result of all activity including the assembly of the runner are: the runout concentricity of cone component which complying the required tolerance and the gap of cone and ring component is according to the permissible allowances. However the runout concentricity of ring component is out of tolerance. Suggestion / proposed
solution is to design a fixture using thread system and the analysis of blades deformation due to welding process is necessary to be done prior the assembly of the runner. |
