Sponge a cellular product, is a two phase system consisting of gas as the dispersed phase in a continuous phase of solid material, e. g. rubber. It has many uses, and for sophisticated purpose usually made from synthetic rubber. Indonesia as one of the main natural rubber producers in the world has a lower consumption of natural rubber product than other countries e.g. Malaysia or Thailand This research intends to make a cellular product for floating pipe made from natural rubber that can be a substitute of synthetic rubber. An important property of sponge is cellular product low density (not more than 0.2 g/ml), with open or closed cells. The results showed that natural rubber can produce cellular product with a minimum density of 0.18 g/ml. The extent of delayed action or length of scorch time is required in order for the compound to blow up and fill all cavities of the mold. Combination of accelerator, CBS, with e efficient or semi efficient dosage of sulfur is the best choice for production of low density cellular rubber using DNPT (Dinitroso pentamethylene tetramine) as blowing agent DNPT is a nitrogen generating blowing agent. The final cellular product has open cells, with a compression set of G % (after ageing 22 hr, 25%), and low mechanical properties, because it has big pores. To improve the mechanical properties, modification of the process is needed, especially molding and vulcanization process system.
