Summary: | Phytoremediation is a process that can be used to eliminate harmful elements or molecules from environment. Accumulator plants are used in phytoremediation as they can absorb the toxic substances which than can be collected and disposed into an isolated place. This research used sporulated Vigna radiata (mung bean) as an accumulator to reduce Cu(II) from its environment. Traces of Cu(II) is essential for plants growth, but Cu(II) in high consentration is hazardous for plants and environment. Levels of Cu(II) that can still be tolerated by sporulation of Vigna radiata and Cu(II) consentration accumulates in Vigna radiata sprout were studied. Seeds of Vigna radiata were grown for 11 days in cotton medium containing 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 ppm of CuSO4 solution. Levels of Cu(II) in the sprouts were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) after wet digestion process. The results indicated that Vigna radiata can still sprouting on the medium with 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 ppm of Cu(II) but the growth is inhibited. The sprout height were reduced by about 5 cm with additional concentration of 10 ppm Cu(II) on the medium. Water content in the sprout is also decreased by about 1% as Cu(II) consentration in the medium is increased by 10 ppm. AAS analysis showed that Vigna radiata sprouts grown in the medium containing Cu(II) 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ppm are able to accumulate 2.3034; 5.0478; 5.8483; 5.2360; 6.1994 ppm Cu(II) respectively or 35.56; 79.12; 91.83; 82.11; 97.40 times higher compare to the control sprouts. |
