Summary:Coal is one of energy resources besides crude oil. Potential coal Indonesia is quite large with total reserves estimated at 57 billion tonnes. However, most of Indonesia coal is grouped into low rank coal which is not beneficial when used directly as an energy source. Lack of low rank coal is generally have moisture content highly. Of course, this condition is no beneficially because its reduces calorific value of coal. One way used to improved the quality of coal is by reducing the water content of coal that is drying. Method of improving the quality of coal is also called coal upgrading method. Testing on coal pneumatic dryer that has been made is necessary to know how much the mass flow rate of coal particle into transport pipe, velocity of air that exhaled by the blower to carry particle toward cyclone separator, and efficiency of particle transportation in the drying system. From the testing, capacity of this pneumatic dryer is 34,3 kg/jam velocity of air is 14,45 m/s, overall efficiency of particle transportation is 89,5 %. Air velocity data obtained from testing, we can use to modeling pneumatic drying system so we can compare both of them. Modeling pneumatic drying system uses software which is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) including Fluent and Gambit. Fluent usefully to modeling transport pipe and cyclone separator. The product from Fluent are vector of velocity, contour of velocity, pacticle track in the cyclone, contour of pressure and cyclone efficiency.
