The application of clay based ceramics product is determined by its physical properties. Chemical composition and particle size of the mineral involved in the body mixture will determine the physical properties. One of the phases formed in fired clay based ceramics is Mullite. The crystallisation of...

The crystallisation of Mullite is a common phenomena occured in thermal transformation from the mineral pyrophyllite.

Without additive Mullite phase will start to occure at 960oC and will completely form at 1590oC[17]. The Mullite formation temperature can be decreased by the addition of some fluxes in mixture. The Mullite characterisation was carried out by using an X-Ray diffraction method and SEM.

In this observation MgO and Borax were added as flux to accelerate the formation of Mullite at 1100oC. The specimens were prepared by a slip casting methods. It is observed that the addition of 3% MgO produced 38.8 w/o of Mullite phase, while 9% addition of Borax has produced 27 w/o. The Mullite phases were observed in the form of platelet and rod like structure. text
