PROBABILISTIC FRACTURE MECHANICS ANALYSIS FOR PRESSURE VESSEL WITH MULTIPLE-SITE DAMAGE

Cracks in components has always been an object of interest, since the component will fail earlier than predicted, moreover if there are more than one crack along the component. Two adjacent cracks will interact and could link up. Fracture mechanics analysis with Swift criterion is employed to predic...

Two adjacent cracks will interact and could link up. Fracture mechanics analysis with Swift criterion is employed to predict when the cracks will link up. The focus of this research is to find the life time of a pressure vessel containing CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) for a certain level of reliability, in which the pressure vessel has two adjacent cracks. This reliability level is closely related to the concept of probability. Fracture mechanics analysis is expanded to the concept of probability to involve stochastic variables. The combination of fracture mechanics with probability concepts into probabilistic fracture mechanic analysis is used in this Bachelor Thesis. Failure probability is simulated using modified direct simulation method. Simulation results shows for a vessel with wall thickness of 7.7 mm with a mean value of crack depth of 3 mm, and distance between cracks tip of 2 mm, with 99.99% of reliability, has a life time of 1.5 years. text
