Summary: | This final project explains about failure of CC20134 locomotive axle. The observation at Cirebon locomotive pool show that axle failure occured at bullgear side journal bearing. Burned mark is seen on the axle surface as if the axle was experienced excessive heat. There were beachmarks on the fracture surface as sign of fatigue failure.
This final project were to find the failure origin, failure sequence, and axle temperature ever achieved. Failure analysis start with stress calculation and experiment about steel temperature relationship with oxide colour to specify axle temperature over failure region. Axle yield strength can be determined and compared with the occurring stress.

The analysis concluded that CC20134 locomotive axle failed due to lubrication failure. Lubrication failure leads friction which increase temperature to about 730 oC. Axle yield strength decreased to 34 MPa while the operating stress is 45,5 MPa, conduced micro plastic deformation resulting micro crack which then propagate and finally failed. |
