THE EVALUATION OF CUT PILOT PLANT‟S DRYING PROCESS TO EFFICIENTLY GET HIGH CALORIVIC VALUE COALS

Coal Upgrading Technology (CUT) is a method to improve coal quality by drying within fluidized beds. CUT final products are in the form of coal briquettes. CUT pilot plant had been built to find out if this method is good enough for commercial scale operation. Drying condition on the pilot plant is...

CUT final products are in the form of coal briquettes. CUT pilot plant had been built to find out if this method is good enough for commercial scale operation. Drying condition on the pilot plant is different from what have been planned before but still produces good quality coal briquettes. This final project verifies the quality of coal briquettes and defining the best drying condition for coal upgrading. The quality of coal became the base to define the best drying condition for CUT. To define the best drying condition, we need to know the character of coal vaporization process. Coal vaporization character can be studied from Thermalgravimetric analysis (TGA). The final conclusion from this final project is the drying condition at 150oC is proven to be the best drying condition. On which temperature, coal moisture had vaporized, while the volatile matter had‟t been vaporized yet. Meanwhile the tar within the coal is known to have melted and ready for use as an adhesive on briquetting process. Drying condition at 150oC fullfilled the criterion needed for coal upgrading process. This final project gives information on drying contition for coal upgrading process. The writer hopes this final project can be usefull for CUT commercial plant development in the future. text
