Trend and variability in the Indo-Pacific throughflow and the regions surrounding the Indonesian Seas in the period of January 1948-October 2011 (64 years) have been investigated by using a 1/4o global version of the HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) by Ningsih et al. (2012) with model domain be...

(2012) with model domain between 25oS - 25oN and 83oE - 161oE. The simulation results show that mean transport of the total Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) is -24.36 ± 8.28 Sv with a decreasing trend from year 1948 – 2011 of about 0.11 Sv per year. Inflow passages of the simulated ITF are Makassar Strait, Halmahera Sea, Molucca Sea, and Natuna Sea, which carry ∼61.11%, 25.54%, 9.77%, and 3.58% of the total ITF, respectively. Meanwhile, the outflow passages are Ombai Strait (26.58% of the total ITF), Sape Strait (22.44% of the total ITF), Lombok Strait (19.37% of the ITF), Alor Strait (15.69% of the total ITF), Arafuru Sea (15.21% of the total ITF), Sunda Strait (0.51% of the total ITF), and Malacca Strait (0.20% of the total ITF). Based on mass transport analysis, elevation of Indonesian Seas tends to be higher than mean SSH because inflow mass transport is stronger than outflow mass transport ini this seas. text
