Pertagas as a subsidiary of PT. Pertamina (Persero) is a company engaged in the middle stream and downstream sectors in gas industry. In order to achieve its vision to become World Class National Gas Company in 2015 and become the International Gas Business Company in 2020. Accordingly, Pertagas has six subsidiaries. Therefore, the need of the right corporate strategy has to be applied. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The aim of this study is to explore the role of portfolio and parenting strategy to improve <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> its performance by organizing the subsidiaries. The conceptual framework involves environmental scanning, strategic positioning, corporate strategy formulation and parenting strategy implementation. This study used qualitative method i.e. in-depth interviews. However, questionnaire is given to gain comprehensive information. The participants are the industry expert at Pertagas and its subsidiaries. The results of preliminary research are analyzed through TOWS matrix and GE matrix in order to formulate the possible potential corporate strategy. The root <br /> <br /> <br /> cause analysis indicates one cause result in the lower market share is due to less developed of its <br /> <br /> <br /> subsidiaries. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> As result, Pertagas is suggested to implement strategies such as cost leadership, operational excellence and technology development. The appropriate directional strategy for Pertagas is concentration, vertical growth with backward integration and also horizontal growth. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> As portfolio strategy, Pertagas should divest its business unit since many business units lay in <br /> <br /> <br /> category two (warning). As parent company, Pertagas has to develop parenting opportunity to improve its market share facing the increased competition. In addition, it pointed out that Pertagas should be able to respond quickly to environmental changes of gas industry by developing, investing and nurturing the right business. The company can develop its strategies by adapting the proposed recommendation.
