Conditions arising from green revolution raised the idea to apply a sustainable and environmental friendly agriculture, both ecological environment and social environment of farmers, in the form of organic farming. Farmers in several regions in Indonesia have started to apply organic farming practice, including farmers in Bantul Regency, DIY Province, in which paddy as the main commodity. However, the development of organic paddy farming in Bantul Regency seems to run slowly. In 2010, the organic farming has been implemented by several Bantul farmers, estimated at approximately 0,26 percent of the whole paddy fields. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The aim of the research is to identify and analyze the factors causing the slow development of organic paddy farming in Bantul Regency. The approach used to address this issue is the methodology of system dynamics.Through system dynamics, a model is developed to illustrate the development of organic paddy farming in Bantul Regency by identifying various interconnected elements and pattern of linkages between these elements. By using that model, several policy scenarios can be designed to stimulate the conversion process of conventional and semi-organic paddy fields into organic ones. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The research results show that the scarcity of organic fertilizer considered as the main factor inhibiting the development of organic paddy farming in Bantul Regency. The failure of farmers’ learning process toward their local environment and their limited capacity in processing organic fertilizer cause the diversification of organic fertilizer undeveloped, consequently some farmers are still rely on dung of beef cattle as a source of organic fertilizer. On the other hand, not all farmers have beef cattle and there is the phenomenon of selling livestock dung, mainly dung of beef cattle, out of Bantul by cattlemen who have no farmland. To encourage the conversion of conventional and semi-organic paddy fields into organic ones, then the policy that needs to be done first is to control the selling of dung of beef cattle out of Bantul, which is accompanied by the efforts to process it into organic fertilizer. To encourage the conversion process all at once increasing the welfare of farmers, the above policy can be combined with increasing the price of organic grain policy or selling organic rice policy. text |
