Geographically, the area is located at UTM 50S , 9615000 – 9625000 M and 270000 – 280000 M. The area is 100 km2 (10 km x 10 km) with 1:12.500 map scale. Morphology of the research area commonly consists of wide to close contours, with elevation of 6 to 288 m above mean sea level. Morphological features are observed with contour map, Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) image, and direct field observation. The research area can be divided to 5 geomorphological units, consist of Denudational Plain Unit, Homoclinal Hills Unit, Isolated Hill Unit, Fault Ridge Unit, and Alluvial Valley Unit. Stratigraphy of the research area is divided into 5 unofficial lithological units from early to late: Chert Unit, Andesite Unit, Sandstone-Claystone Unit, Claystone Unit, and Alluvial Deposit Unit. Geological structures of the research area are Batuampar Dextral Strike-slip Fault, Carikan Normal Fault, Pelawangan Normal Fault, and Balau Normal Fault. Geological history of the research area started at Late Cretaceous with deep marine volcanism and deposition of Chert Unit, then Andesite Unit developed unconformably over it. At Early Paleocene, regional uplifts, rifting, normal fault, and basin opening developed. At Middle Eocene, the Sandstone-Claystone Unit was deposited unconformably over the Andesite Unit in transition (delta plain) environment. At Late Eocene, transgression developed and the Claystone Unit was deposited over the Sandstone-Claystone Unit in shallow marine environment. After that, at Plio-Pleistocene, compression regime, regional uplift, strike-slip fault, and inversion developed. From Plio-Pleistocene to Recent, erosion and river deposit Alluvial Deposit Unit and shape the morphology to recent form. Cleat analyses are conducted at 2 stations, BAR-05 and UKB-01. Cleat geometry data measured to analyze the orientation, intensity, and aperture. Analyses result showed variation at the 2 stations; orientations and cumulative aperture variations which showed effect of geological structure, and intensity variations which showed coal thickness differences effect. text
