Summary: | THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMEN WITH PLASTIC AS
AN ADDITIVE AND ITS PERFORMANCE ON HRA
MIXTURES, Yolly Detra Asrar, 2001, Program Magister Pascasaijana
Teknik Sipil Pengutamaan Rekayasa Transportasi, Institut Teknologi
Bandung.
High temperature of road pavement, high rainfall and traffic loading
are some several reasons caused some defects on asphaltic pavement in
Indonesia. Many attempts have been done in reducing these tendency of
defects and one ofthem is by introducing an additive agent in bitumen to
change its physical properties especially in temperature susceptibility
and stripping, and associated with aggregate to make a better asphaltic
mixture suited to high temperature and heavy rainfall condition like in
Indonesia.
In this study, the use ofplastic as an additive in bituminous material
agent is expected to change the physical properties of bitumen and
improve mix stability and its resistance to deformation. The results show
that the addition of 0% to 5% of plastic into the bitumen lead to a
reduction in penetration value from 74,9 to 66,6 Although additional of
plastic reduce softening point of bitumen, addition of I % to 5% plastic
cause a relative small changes ofmixing and compaction temperatures
The result ofMarshall test shown that the addition ofplastic up to 3%
in bitumen, improves the stability, density, CAD and Marshall Quotient
of HRA mixture. In line with the addition of plastic content in bitumen,
permanent deformation ofmix resulted from the wheel tracking test are
decreased and caused an improvement in dynamic stability of mix. In
general, the results ofthis study shown that the addition of2% to 3% of
plastic to bitumen gives a better influence to asphalt mix characteristic. |
