Data collection was carried out in July and August 2000 by distributing questioners, which was compiled using stated preference method. The areas where the data was collected included shopping center, places of worship, hospital, bus stations and residential areas. The data was further analyzed in order to obtained characteristics of the taxi users, taxi choice model, and to estimate the number of taxi needed in Padang. Some characteristics of the taxi users have been identified. Most users were in the age of 16 – 45 years old (89.03%); about seventy-one percent (71.16%) of the users have monthly family income of Rp. 500,000.00 - Rp. 1,500,000.00; about forty-six percent (46.08%) of the users have no private vehicle and about forty-five percent (45. 15%) have only one private vehicle. Homes are the most origin and destination of the trips (38.36% and 49.53%). Most users use taxi once a month (29.78%) or as often as 2 – 4 times a week (25.08%). For most cases, time is the main reason in using taxi (47.48%). The taxi choice model was developed using the stated preference data. Statistical test indicated that the model was good. Elasticity test showed that the effect of each attribute depends on the user\'s socio economic conditions. Those with Rp. 1,000,000.00 per month income would prioritize time (waiting time and in-vehicle time) over fare and the family income whereas those with monthly income of Rp. 500,000.00 or below would give importance on fare rather than time. The requirement for taxi in Padang today was estimated by formulating a model for trip rate of taxi users based on their socio economic conditions. By using population distribution based on income per capita, the number of taxi is adequate if the users are less then 10% of the population. text |
