Summary: | As a wave propagates from deep water to shallow water, its height is increasing so that it can cause the erosion on the shore. In order to reduce the damage on the shore, preventive action needs to be taken by using breakwater. There are four type of breakwater; conventional type of breakwater, monolithic type of breakwater, composite type of breakwater, and floating breakwater. This final assignment presents the changes of wave characteristics before and after approaches a floating breakwater based on laboratory experiments with three different wave scenarios and five designs of floating structure. <br />

This research shows that floating breakwater can dampened the height of incoming wave. The reduced wave height is affected by the design of the floating structure used as well as the wave parameter. On the scenario of small amplitude and long period wave (5 cm amplitude and 3,2 seconds period), the floating structure design of 50% sinking body shows a maximum potential to reduce wave height (16%). Another scenario of large amplitude and short period wave (11 cm amplitude and 1,8 seconds period), the floating structure design of fully singking body and steepest slope shows a maximum potential to reduce wave height by about 41%. The same result can also be seen on the scenario of largest amplitude and shortest period wave (15 cm amplitude and 1,6 seconds period) where the design of floating structure with great slope is the best design to reduce wave height (47%). This shows that floating structure with the biggest slope is the best and most effective design to reduce wave height on the scenario of large amplitude and short period wave. |
