The coastal area is a center of social activity and economic activity. As a center of social and economic activities, the coastal areas are potential areas to be developed and utilized so that there will be changes and land uses in the form of land use. Land use is a form of physical influence of human activities on the earth's surface that associated with population growth and activity. In this research, the areas to be monitored is the District South Bontang, Bontang City, East Kalimantan Province. To see the change in land use in that region are then used Ikonos satellite’s image in 2006 to see the land use in 2006 and QuickBird satellite’s image in 2012 to see the use land use in 2012. The two results are compared to get the changes to land use in 2006 up to 2012. The identification and interpretation of land use is done by using software AcrGIS according to classification by the Indonesian National Standard (INS) Land Use Bakosurtanal 1:50.000. The biggest land use changes is the residential area that increased by 46.19 Ha, and the open land that decreased by 93.08 Ha from the total land use change in the research area that is equal to 112.58 Ha. That change in land use have the social and economic impact to the local population. The impact on the social conditions of the population can be seen in the population change, in 2006 a population of 125,187 people and in 2012 increase to 149,230 people and the number of people who work from 2006 to 2011 increase by 21,538 people. On the economic impact can be seen from the change of revenue increase by Rp,4,870.051,680.- and change in the level of poverty in the region decrease by 1.55% from 2006 to in 2012.
