Summary:Kiaracondong railway station area is one of the transit center that was active in the eastern city of Bandung. The area has problems of accessibility and integration as a transit area. Nowadays, there are fragmentation between the functions of station with the function surrounding a transit station due to the unavailability of pedestrian paths that will switch transportation modes of train to public city transport or vice versa. Conditions resulted in the region become uncomfortable and safe (friendly) for both transit users or other users. Another problem is the occupation in the area on land owned by PT. KAI because the organic growth of settlements and commercials in the vicinity of the station and on the outskirts of the railroad. This will potentially cause interference and endangering for the operation of railways. Various problems occur in the region should be resolved relating to the plan of PT. KAI that would improve services to the Kiaracondong railway station from economy class to business class and executive class. In addition to planned increase in rail infrastructure from single to double track in the future. <br /> <br /> <br /> Based on the analysis conducted in the area, it is necessary to redevelop the area which aims to improve and enhance the accessibility of the area in order to become a transit friendly area for all users. So it can accommodate the needs of transit in the future. Therefore, the selected concept for these thesis is redevelopment based on transit-friendly. This concept is making physical changes and morphological function of the area which was initially dominated by a single function that has a low density and private vehicles oriented into the compact mixed-use area with pedestrian-oriented character. The main purpose of the application of this concept is to provide a multiple choices of transportation by providing safely and comfortable (friendly) access for all transit users, especially pedestrians. <br /> <br /> <br /> Some transit friendly principles that apply to the Kiaracondong railway station area are include mixed-use development concentrated to the station, improve accessibility for pedestrians, arrange transit service to multiple choices of transportation modes, vertical building development to increase the intensity, and provide main open space as a waiting area and activity center near the station. On the other hand, there are some efforts to develop the area that refers to the government plan there are improving station facilities and infrastructure; developing functions of residential, commercial, offices and small industries; planning of housing areas (public houses) with a land sharing system to accommodate the local residents housing needs; and increasing local commercial and ndustry activity to support the sustainability of local economy. <br /> <br /> <br /> Design method which is done in this thesis begins with the identification of conditions the region, in the form of transit potentials and problems which refers to the issues and design purposes. Then, are performed literature review and case studies relating to the redevelopment of railway station area and design principles based on transit friendly. Then proceed with the formulating of development concepts and design principles based on the identification of potential and problems at the area and the results of literature review and comparative cases study. The final step is simulating the concepts and principles by doing a physical intervention into the Kiaracondong railway station area in visual form. <br /> <br /> <br /> It is expected that with this thesis can enrich the study of the development of transit areas, particularly in the area of railway station located in the residential neighborhood. In addition, this study is expected to provide inputs for the government and developers in developing the railway station area, it’s also associated with the efforts to provide a transit friendly areas and improve the quality of life (sociocultural) and economies in the area.
