Description
Summary:Islamic center in Kepaon moslem village, Bali, is needed to accommodate religious activities of moslems of Denpasar, to support economic activities at Kepaon village and tourism sector of Bali. Kepaon moslem village have experienced acculturation process with the Balinese culture. Learning from this history came the idea to combine of Islamic and Balinese architecture in the design of the Islamic Center.

The Islamic Center in Kepaon village consists of mosque, commercial facilities, education facilities, convention hall, and guest room. The design process of Islamic Center was initiated by a study of the principles of Islamic and Balinese architecture in terms of spaces, shapes, and building ornaments. The aim of the study is to find the commonality of principles so that they can be used as a basic concept for the architectural synthesis between Islam and Bali.

The design of the Islamic Center implements natah, a Balinese concept of open space, as a meeting point between the spatial patterns of Islamic and Balinese

architecture. Natah is designed with flexibility to function as space to accomodate a variety of social activities including trading activities like those in the traditional Islamic cities. However, the walls that form the natah is designed with traditional Balinese architecture. Decorative ornaments of Islamic Center incorporate floral forms as found in Islamic and Balinese architecture.
