DSSC provide an alternative solar cell that is cheap, easy to fabricate, non-toxic and environmentally friendly with broad application versatility. This study focused on the determination of the easy fabrication method that can be applied to a simple laboratory scale. Aspects of the study include TiO2 thin film manufacturing techniques, the TiO2 sensitizer impregnation technique, the influence of the type of crystalline TiO2, the effect of adding additives to the sensitizer, and the effect of the addition of additives to the electrolyte liquid. In this study, the food coloring erythrosine is used as sensitizer, where it is widely available in the market with cheap and known to exhibit photocatalytic activity of interest. Testing DSSC device performance is measured based on the I-V curves under 100 mW/cm2 irradiation of solar simulator using AM 1.5 filter. The results of this study show that the best technique of making TiO2 thin films is the spin coating method. Erythrosine mixing with TiO2 paste and a thin TiO2 coating layer on top of the ITO before TiO2/Erythrosine yield 0.021 mA/cm2 of Jsc and Voc of 0.325 V, while FF of 36% that gives the efficiency of of 2.47 × 10-3 %. The use of TiO2 rutile type does not provide any current response. The addition of 100 ppm of additive gentian violet on the sensitizer increases the value of efficiency to 3.00 × 10-3 %; while the addition of 4 - Pyridinecarboxylic acid hydrazide in the liquid electrolytes improve the efficiency of the cell to 6.05 × 10-3 %. text
